SUMMARY:Dinner Meeting: Geophysical Methods for Shear Wave Site Classification
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 5th for our next networking and educational dinner meeting. \nWe are pleased to welcome John Diehl from GeoVision to present on Geophysical Methods for Shear Wave Site Classification. \nFor Seismic design\, the 2022 California Building Code (CBC) and 2018 International Building Code (IBC) reference the provisions in ASCE 7\, defining Site Classes from Site Class A – Hard Rock to Site Class F – Soils requiring site response analysis. \nIn the latest version of ASCE 7 (ASCE 7-22)\, the most significant change regarding site classes is the increased emphasis on using shear wave velocity (Vs30) as the primary factor for site classification\, eliminating reliance on blow counts alone\, and introducing intermediate site classes (BC\, CD\, DE) to smooth out transitions between classes\, resulting in a more nuanced representation of soil conditions and their impact on seismic design. \nIn this presentation\, we will discuss multiple geophysical methods that can be used to measure Vs30 to determine Site Class\, including seismic refraction\, surface wave surveys and borehole logging techniques.  We will also discuss the upcoming changes to the Site Classes\, and the implications for geotechnical studies and engineering projects. \nSchedule: \n\n5:00-6:00pm Registration & networking social\n6:00pm Dinner\n6:30-7:30pm Presentation\n\nLocation: Skylinks Golf Course\, Long Beach\, CA \nSponsors: Please contact us if you are interested in sponsoring our event. Options include sponsoring the social hour\, or for $300\, a table for your materials and 5-min introduction at the dinner meeting. \nNote: If you get an error page or “Oops! That page cannot be found” message after registering\, please do not re-purchase. Your purchase most likely went through and we are working on the issue.
