Beneath the Tracks: Geotechnical Design for High-Speed Rail – September Dinner Meeting

Rouzbeh (Rouz) Vakili, PhD, PE is a Project Manager and Geotechnical Lead with HNTB Corporation, with more than 19 years of experience in geotechnical, transportation, and underground infrastructure engineering. He specializes in geotechnical investigations, foundation engineering, tunneling, instrumentation and monitoring, and the design of complex transportation infrastructure. Dr. Vakili has led geotechnical efforts on major projects throughout North America, including High-Speed Rail, major transit and highway improvement programs, airport redevelopment projects, and tunnel and bridge infrastructure developments. In addition to his project leadership experience, he has authored numerous technical publications and conference papers on geotechnical engineering, foundation systems, underground construction, and ground improvement technologies. His work focuses on delivering innovative, practical solutions that enhance the resilience, sustainability, and performance of critical transportation infrastructure.
Murali Hariharan, PE, GE serves as Senior Project Manager and Engineering Lead for HNTB’s Southern California Offices for Geotechnical and Underground projects and manages and delivers these projects for internal and external clients. Murali has over 25 years of structural and geotechnical engineering experience in the design and construction of transit structures, slope and landslide stabilization, underground subway stations, seismic design, high-speed rail geotechnical works, tunnels, shafts, complex deep excavation support, slurry walls, ground improvement and retaining walls in a wide variety of geotechnical conditions. He has authored several papers in nationally recognized conferences and journals. His projects have also won awards in the State of California.
