MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Greetings to all ASCE Geo-Institute Los Angeles Members,
I am honored and excited to serve as the Chair for the ASCE Geo-Institute Los Angeles Chapter this year. Our chapter has long been a hub for geotechnical engineers and professionals in related fields, thriving in a region that presents unique geotechnical challenges and opportunities. Southern California remains a key center for advancing geotechnical engineering, and it’s truly inspiring to see the expertise and innovation coming from our members.
This year, we are especially committed to addressing climate change and its direct implications for geotechnical engineering. The challenges posed by climate change, such as land subsidence, erosion, and rising sea levels, are directly tied to our work, and we have a responsibility to integrate sustainable practices and solutions into everything we do. Our mission continues to focus on advancing geotechnical knowledge, but we also recognize the need to innovate and contribute to the global push toward sustainability.
As always, we will provide enriching experiences through our meetings, seminars, and special events, where technical excellence is paired with the social camaraderie that makes our profession so unique. Whether it’s through our annual meetings or our hallmark Kenneth Lee Spring Seminar at the Queen Mary, your involvement helps build a stronger, more vibrant community. The opportunities for learning, networking, and forming lasting professional relationships are invaluable.
Since our founding in 1995, our chapter has thrived thanks to the dedication of our volunteer Board and the ongoing contributions of new volunteers each year. I encourage all members to consider stepping into a more active role and contribute to shaping the future of our chapter, particularly as we aim to address the critical issues of climate change and sustainability in geotechnical engineering.
I look forward to working with all of you to make this a rewarding and impactful year.
~ Ali Shafiee, Ph.D., P.E.
